Fifty million years old, it formed when magma forced itself upward through sedimentary rock, and the softer stone eroded away over millennia, leaving the harder core standing. The earth built its own watchtower long before we thought of the idea. There are no eagles in this frame. The sentinel is the land itself. Mary Colter built it in 1932 in the tradition of the ancient Ancestral Puebloan towers that came before it. Humans have always built high to see farther.
